Former rider and cycling entrepreneur Andrea Manfredi has died in the Lion Air plane crash in Indonesia.

Manfredi was confirmed to be one of the 189 passengers that were aboard the Boeing 737 Max 8 of Lion Air that crashed in the Javan Sea just after departing from Jakarta, Indonesia. The 26-year-old was on a cycling trip that had its first stop in Hong Kong and the next in Jakarta.

The former rider turned professional at Bardiani-CSF but after a lack of results decided to retire in 2016 to start his own company of sports products, Sportek, which provides some teams of the Italian cycling scene.

Manfredi was set to return to Italy in a couple of days. Bardiani-CSF has already reacted to the news. "Management, athletes, staff and team sponsors express their condolences to the family and to all those dear to Andrea," said the team in a press release.

"The memory of a serious guy and in love with his sport will remain indelible in the minds of all those who, in these years, have had the good fortune to know him."

CyclingPub extends its condolences to the family, friends and teammates of Manfredi, as well as to the entire cycling community.
