Trek-Segafredo Toms Skujins has taken the victory at the Tre Valli Varesine. The rider was the fastest at the reduced final sprint.

The rider is the first Latvian to win the Italian race and he did so after staying at the front group during the last kilometres after the escapees were reeled back in and the peloton was fragmented due to the final climb. A strong group was formed in front by riders like Michael Woods, Rigoberto Uran, Wilco Kelderman, Thibaut Pinot, Skujins and Peter Kennaugh.

After the last kilometres, in which several riders tried their luck, it all came to a final sprint. Pinot was the first to launch the sprint after Uran did the work for Woods, but the Latvian showed to be the strongest in the final metres.

"It's definitely one of the biggest wins of my career, for sure," said Skujins after the finish line. "I do love racing in Italy, and it's a nice race to get on my palmares."

"I definitely knew it was going to be aggressive, and that's why we had three guys saved for the final to make the race exciting. The only reason I attacked in the first place was because Gianluca (Brambilla) got on the radio and said 'Toms you should go for it.'

"At first we were three, and then more guys came up, and at the finish, we were 7 or 8 or something, and luckily I won the sprint. The team was really strong again; this was another result for the team, same as Sunday when Bauke (Mollema) won. Today as well we had guys represented in every move, and we had guys earlier really taking care of us. I, Gianluca and Nicola (Conci) were ready to make the final exciting."
