WB-Aqua Protect-Veranclassic's Jimmy Duquennoy has unexpectedly died on Friday evening. His team has said that the 23-year-old's death was a consequence of a cardiac arrest.

The rider became a professional at the Belgian team in 2017 and with it he achieved top-20 spots in races like Dwars door West-Vlaanderen, the Münsterland Giro and the Kampioenschap van Vlaanderen. "The WB-Aqua Protect-Veranclassic team was informed on Saturday morning about the terrible and unbearable news of the death of its rider Jimmy Duquennoy," said the team in a Facebook message.

"Jimmy died unexpectedly on Friday night at his home. He was a 23-year-old man that was the most jovial, kind and open. He started running in our colours before achieving his dream of becoming a professional rider at the Wallonie Bruxelles of 2016."

Team Manager Christophe Brandt also heard the news in the morning from team leader Frederic Amorison. "Jimmy passed away at his home last night," he said to Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad. "He lived with his girlfriend Sally and they were watching at something on the television. At one point, she asked Jimmy about something and he did not answer, he appeared to have died.

"There were never any complaints from his side. Jimmy was still planning to have a cruise with Sally on the Nile and he had posted something on Facebook about that on Friday. Now everything is gone. He was a boy with a lot of talent and a very interesting person."

CyclingPub extends its condolences to the family, friends and teammates of Duquennoy, as well as to the entire cycling community.
