Romain Bardet (France) was second at the road race of the World Championships of Innsbruck. The rider couldn't beat Alejandro Valverde at the final sprint.

The Frenchman was part of the four men that arrived together to the finish line, along with Michael Woods, Tom Dumoulin and World Champion Valverde. "I have invested a lot in this championship race," he commented.

"I had a lot of fun during those weeks of training. I knew that I would be in at the finish. There was a great energy within the French team. I am not disappointed. It would have been difficult to go faster in the sprint. Alejandro Valverde is one of the fastest riders in the world."

The French team was in charge of pulling at the last climb and prepared the terrain for Bardet. "I made a small error at the top of the final climb, but luckily that didn’t really matter in the end," the rider said.

"The entire French team did a great race. And there are still some races to look forward to like the Tour of Lombardy to close the season."
