Mitchelton-Scott's Annemiek van Vleuten has taken the victory at the prologue of the Boels Ladies Tour. The rider took the victory of the time trial sporting her rainbow colours as the World Champion of the discipline.

Van Vleuten has started to defend her title at the Dutch race with a good foot by finishing the 3.3-kilometre course in four minutes and 22 seconds, seven seconds faster than Anna van der Breggen (Boels-Dolmans). Sunweb's Ellen van Dijk set the third fastest time of the day.

"When you pass the finish line in a prologue it always hurts like crazy and it never feels like you did a good job," van Vleuten commented. "I tried to go out of the saddle in the last 200metres but I felt like I could almost not pedal anymore. My legs were completely full with lactic acid so I knew that I didn't leave anything out there.

"Then they told me I won by seven seconds, so that was a big surprise. Last year I won the prologue in my hometown by five seconds in five kilometres, so now to win in three kilometres with seven seconds is surprising."

The Dutch rider also took the GC lead after her performance in the prologue.
