European Championships Glasgow 2018

Marta Bastianelli (Italy) has won the European Championships Road Race. The Italian rider was the fastest at the final sprint at Glasgow.

The race was 130 kilometres long and featured a mostly flat route with some ascents that didn't go beyond 50 metres in height. The race was very active and had attacks from riders like Sophie Wright (Great Britain), Sabrina Stultiens and Lucinda Brand (The Netherlands).

At around 15 kilometres to go, a group that included riders like Anna van der Breggen (The Netherlands), Elisa Longo Borghini (Italy), and Danielle Rowe (Great Britain) took a lead of more than 30 seconds over a pack led by Ellen van Dijk and Marianne Vos (The Netherlands).

With eight kilometres remaining van der Breggen attacked from the front and Longo Borghini was the only one of the escapees that could stay at her wheel. At three kilometres from the finish, Longo Borghini attacked but was followed by van der Breggen, while Vos tried to unsuccessfully escape from the pack.

The duo was caught near the last kilometre and the Netherlands team tried to set a good pace for the last metres but Italy's Marta Bastianelli attacked at the last moment and took the victory.

Vos crossed the finish line in the second place and Germany's Lisa Brennauer was third.
