Astana's Luis Leon Sanchez has crashed at the second stage of the Tour de France, which forced him to withdraw from the race with five fractures.
The Spaniard crashed at 40 kilometres from the end and even though he got back on his bike to attempt to finish the stage, the pain proved to be too much for the rider and he had to get into the ambulance and retire from the race.
Further examination at the local hospital of La Roche-sur-Yon showed that the rider has a fracture in his elbow and in four of his left ribs. Sanchez will undergo surgery to the elbow in Spain in the upcoming days.
After the surgery, a new assessment of the condition of the rider will be made and the recovery period will be communicated by Astana.
