Nairo Quintana (Movistar) has lost time after he punctured his both wheels with a bit more of three kilometres to go. Mikel Landa and Alejandro Valverde had a better day and arrived with the front part of the peloton.

The last kilometres were chaotic with crashes and punctures, and Quintana was one of the victims of the latter. "He went over a traffic island at around 600-700 metres from the three-kilometre banner and he broke his two wheels, making it impossible to continue," said Movistar's team manager Eusebio Unzue.

"In a crash before the incident of (Chris) Froome and the punctures of Quintana, Jose Joaquín Rojas was affected. He is the designated rider to give Nairo his bike in the case of a bike failure. The other Movistar riders that were in front stopped immediately to wait for him."

Quintana was disappointed at the end of the stage. "I went over a traffic island close to the three-kilometre mark," explained the Colombian. "I broke my two wheels and I couldn't continue like that. That is the way it is and I don't have other option but to keep going forward."

Landa was a bit more fortunate and crossed the finish line with the first part of the peloton, but it was a stressful day also for him. "It was a catastrophe," he commented at the finish line. "The first three-quarters of the stage was quiet, but the final was very tense and difficult.

"You never count on things like this and it is very hard. We are in the first stage and we will have to continue day by day."
