Richie Porte (BMC) will be backed at the Tour de France by a team that will largely resemble the one that helped him claim the 2018 Tour de Suisse victory.

The Australian aims to a podium spot at the French grand tour trying to improve from the fifth place that he took at the 2016 edition of the race. The rider will have Tejay van Garderen and Damiano Caruso as support in the mountains, while Greg van Avermaet and Simon Gerrans will be by his side on the flat stages and the cobbles day, and Michael Schär and Stefan Küng will be there for the team time trial.

"We are confident in our team," said sports director Fabio Baldato. "The Tour de France team selection is never easy but I think we have chosen seven strong and motivated riders to support Richie Porte. We saw at the Tour de Suisse what Richie and five riders from the team were able to do by working every day to defend the jersey."

Porte is confident in his shape for the Tour de France challenge. "I'm ready for the Tour de France," stated the Australian. "Winning the Tour de Suisse was a big boost to my confidence, not only on a personal level knowing I wasn't yet in my best shape but also for the team.

"The guys were fantastic there and the fact that our Tour de France team is comprised more or less of the same riders, with the addition of Damiano Caruso and Paddy Bevin, is really motivating. After a solid training camp at altitude, I will arrive in the Vendée region knowing I have done everything I can to prepare for the Tour de France."

BMC Racing Team's complete roster for the Tour de France (7th to 29th of July):

Patrick Bevin
Damiano Caruso
Simon Gerrans
Stefan Küng
Richie Porte
Michael Schär
Greg Van Avermaet
Tejay van Garderen
