Chris Froome all but secured the overall victory of the Giro d'Italia with a solid display in the penultimate stage.

Froome reacted well to several attacks by his nearest rival Tom Dumoulin and finished safely in the group of favorites to confirm his first place ahead of what should be an uneventful final stage to Rome.

"I had to follow in the final there but I felt very much in control, and very capable of following today," the Team Sky leader said. "Everyone had such a hard day yesterday so no one really had the extra legs to go anywhere.

"This Giro has been brutal, absolutely brutal. When someone tends to have a bad day here, it's not just a matter of thirty seconds or one minutes. It's ten, fifteen minutes. It's a brutal race. You could see it today. Thibaut Pinot was in trouble so Astana turned the screws and took advantage of the situation. We just had to follow and I had to keep an eye on Tom."

Froome was seen sprinting to the finish in the last meters, even though there were no bonification seconds to be divided.

"Just to stay at the front," the Briton explained. "Obviously there were mountain points at the finish and I have the Mountain Jersey at the moment, so just to keep in front of everything."
