Tom Dumoulin of Team Sunweb was happy with his performance at the end of stage 11, in which he finished second to Simon Yates and limited the damage to just a few seconds.

The Dutchman was the only rider to stay close to Yates as the Mitchelton-Scott rider attacked on the final climb. At the end, the gap between the two riders was just two seconds, with Yates also taking four additional bonus seconds.

"I wasn’t good enough for the win but I’m super satisfied," Dumoulin said. "The legs were a bit painful at the beginning but I think everyone had that after yesterday. As the stage progressed I felt much better.

"I tried to follow Yates but I couldn’t close the gap and stayed at the same distance, I can’t blame myself. I am feeling very good, this is my best result since Jerusalem and my best feeling so far. This coming weekend is going to be super hard and I will give my best to defend this position. It’s still a long way until Rome."

Dumoulin remains in second place in the overall standings, at 47 seconds from race leader Yates.
