Matej Mohoric took a well deserved win at the Giro d'Italia after beating Nico Denz in a sprint of two at the finish of stage 10.

The Slovenian of Bahrain-Merida had attacked earlier and was initially joined by Davide Villella, but ended up fighting for the stage againstAG2R La Mondiale rider Denz.

"It's amazing," Mohoric said. "I'm super happy for myself but first of all for the team because they gave me this opportunity, even though (Domenico) Pozzovivo is feeling super good for the GC. He gave me a free card today to play for the stage win, and I'm super happy for it.

"I was not super confident," he added about the final sprint. "That's why I tried to attack him before, a couple of times in the last ten kilometers. But then he collaborated even though I attacked him so I decided to risk it all for the final sprint and go for it. I was not super confident but when I saw that he was not catching me I gave it even more power and tried to go all the way to the line."

This is the second grand tour stage win for Mohoric, who also won the seventh stage at the Vuelta a España last year. The win in this Giro is a good sign for the 23-year-old.

"I think this year I made a big step forward. I feel very good at Bahrain-Merida. They gave me lots of support and lots of opporunities to go for my own results. I am super happy about it and I hope that there's more to come until the end of this season.
