Michael Valgren Andersen is one of the revelations of this season, with a victory in the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and a fourth place in the Tour of Flanders. Today he added another classic victory to his palmares by winning the Amstel Gold Race.

He escaped with Roman Kreuziger and, unlike the 2016 edition where he took second place, he managed to beat his fellow escapee this time. The Astana rider made the decisive cut together with teammate and fellow Dane Jakob Fuglsang. “This shows Danish cycling is really on the rise,” said Valgren after the race. Earlier this season Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) showed the Danes will have more to cheer for in the coming years, with impressive performances in Dwars door Vlaanderen and the Tour of Flanders.

Before the flash interview Astana’s team manager, Alexandre Vinokourov, spoke with today’s winner. "Vinokourov congratulated me. He saw a strong team today and I agree with him because we were strong. De Vreese worked hard, Fraile helped me a lot, and finally Fuglsang was strong and tired out the others so I could attack. The second attempt was right. It was great,"

After winning both a cobbled and one of the Ardennes classics, the question arises what kind of rider Valgren is. "I don’t know what type of rider I am. I won Liège-Bastogne-Liège U23 twice and the Ardennes have a special place in my heart. Last year I tried the cobblestones and I finished 11th in Flanders. I was considering going for the cobbles 100% after my fourth place this year, but now I win here and I would like to do these races as well. I’m happy my team lets me do both."
