Belgian Michael Goolaerts has passed away in hospital following the cardiac arrest he suffered during Paris-Roubaix on Sunday.

The devastating news was confirmed through a message posted by the rider's team Veranda's Willems - Crelan.

"It is with unimaginable sadness that we have to communicate the passing of our rider and friend Michael Goolaerts," the statement read.

"He passed away Sunday evening at 22:40 in Lille hospital in the presence of his family members and loved ones, who we keep in our thoughts. He died of cardiac arrest, all medical assistance was to no avail.

"For now there will be no further communication as we want to give his close ones time to deal with this terrible loss. We thank you in advance for respecting the privacy of his relatives."

The 23-year-old was in his second full season as a professional rider after having joined Veranda's Willems - Crelan at the start of 2017. On March 4 of this year, Goolaerts finished ninth in Dwars door West-Vlaanderen.

At this very difficult moment, we want to express our deepest sympathies to Michael's loved ones, and wish them much strength for the time to come.
