Bora-hansgrohe's Jay McCarthy took the victory in the third stage of the Vuelta al Pais Vasco. The rider was the fastest in the final sprint, crossing the finish line ahead of Alexandr Riabushenko and Michal Kwiatkowski.

The third stage of the Spanish race was 187 kilometres long between Bermeo and Villanueva de Valdegovia, featuring one climb of the second category and two of the third. Eight riders escaped early on the day and created a gap of more than six minutes with the pack.

The front group included riders like Christopher Juul Jensen (Mitchelton-Scott), Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal), Ben King and Willie Smit (Dimension Data). With around 40 kilometres to go, De Gendt changed the pace and only Juul Jensen managed to stay at his wheel.

At around 20 kilometres from the finish line, Michal Kwiatkowski and David de la Cruz (Sky) attacked from the peloton and joined De Gendt and Juul Jensen in front. The first of the escapees to give up was De Gendt, who was caught by the pack with 13 kilometres to go and soon after Kwiatkowski also finished his work of the day and left the remaining two riding on their own.

At the 10-kilometre mark, BMC's Dylan Teuns attacked from the peloton but was reeled back in four kilometres later. With three kilometres to go, Jose Joaquin Rojas (Movistar) jumped from the pack and caught the front men and the peloton followed forming a compact group ahead of the final.

Alex Aranburu (Caja Rural) launched an attack at the two-kilometre mark and although he created a good gap with the peloton, he was caught with 500 meters to go. The sprint was launched right after and Bora-hansgrohe's Jay McCarthy showed to be the strongest man, crossing the finish line ahead of Alexandr Riabushenko (UAE Team Emirates) and Kwiatkowski.

Alaphilippe keeps the lead of the General Classification.
