A group of about thirty riders, including favourites Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ), has been disqualified from the race after ignoring a closed railroad crossing.

By the time the group came up to the crossing they were about half a minute behind the main peloton, being caught up in the echelons that have been of influence all day.

The race directors were quick in their response and disqualified the whole group of riders that also included fast man Ricardo Minali (Astana).

Since the 2015 Paris-Roubaix the UCI has toughened the rules regarding level crossings. A 2018 update to the rules puts the riders at risk of a fine and a suspension of up to one month.
