Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) took the victory at the last stage of the Volta a Catalunya while Alejandro Valverde got the overall win of the race.

The last stage of the Spanish race was 154.8 kilometres long with start and finish in Barcelona and it started very fast, with a peloton that neutralised all the escape attempts from the beginning. With almost 50 kilometres to go, a breakaway was finally formed by riders like Pierre Roland (EF Education First-Drapac), Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Merida) and Bram Tankink (LottoNL-Jumbo).

A few kilometres later Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott) bridged to the front group just before the third ascent of the Montjuic, which proved to be too difficult for some of the riders of the escape. Before the fourth climb of the Montjuic a new group of riders including Sergio Henao, Marc Soler and Simon Yates joined the remaining escapees and got some more seconds on the pack.

With 20 kilometres remaining on the stage, race leader Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) made a move from the peloton and took Sky's Egan Bernal with him. The change of rhythm neutralised the escape and the peloton rode together, even though they were attempts by riders like Soler, Bob Jungels and Carlos Verona.

During the penultimate ride on the final circuit, Verona, Yates, Soler and Mohoric managed to create a gap with the rest, while behind him there was a crash that left Bernal, Jose Joaquin Rojas and Dan Martin forced to abandon the race.

Yates attacked with 4 kilometres from the end and created a gap big enough to allow him to take a solo victory. Valverde arrived with the peloton and secured the overall victory of the race. Teammate Nairo Quintana and Roland completed the podium.
