Quick-Step Floors' Maximilian Schachmann has won the sixth stage of the Volta a Catalunya. The rider was part of a duo that arrived to the finish line together and was faster in the sprint of two.

The sixth stage of the Spanish race had to be shortened due to snow and fog in both the start and finish locations. With 17 kilometres into the day, Maximilian Schachmann (Quick-Step Floors) and Diego Rubio (Burgos BH) escaped and created a gap of more than three minutes with the peloton.

With 25 kilometres remaining, the wind caused echelons in the pack and broke it into different groups, creating a bit of tension and chaos.

The duo arrived to the last kilometres with an advantage of around half a minute and the reduced peloton didn't seem fast enough to catch them. The escapees arrived to the finish line and Rubio launched the sprint first but he wasn't strong enough to beat Schachmann, who got his first victory in a WorldTour race.

Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) arrived with the reduced peloton and managed to retain the leader's jersey with one stage to go.
