Fabio Aru has decided to withdraw from the Volta a Catalunya at the end of the fifth stage. The rider has taken this decision with the full support of his team.

The Italian suffered a crash during the first stage of the Spanish race and since then has been struggling with pain in his left leg. This feeling of discomfort cost him 12 minutes and 23 seconds in the fourth stage in respect to winner Alejandro Valverde (Movistar).

The fifth stage of the race has not been better for the rider as he finished 13 minutes and 33 seconds behind the winner of the day, Jarlinson Pantano. Even though at the start of the day, Aru and the team refused to abandon the Volta a Catalunya to "honour the race and prepare for the Giro d'Italia", as he commented to the Gazzetta Dello Sport, at the end of the day they have decided that it is time to withdraw.

"In agreement with the medical staff and the team’s technical staff, Fabio Aru has decided to not take part in the sixth stage of the Volta a Catalunya, preferring to concentrate on recovering his leg that limited him during the race," said the team in a press release.

"With Doctor De Grandi, UAE Team Emirates medic, Aru on Saturday morning will have an MRI scan at the Clinica Sagrada Familia in Barcelona."
