Dimension Data's Scott Thwaites has fractured his spine during a training ride. The Briton was in full form to face the upcoming cobbled classics.

The 28-year-old rider has already gone through a surgical procedure. "He sustained several fractures to his vertebral column, but fortunately there were no neurological injuries," said Dimension Data in a press release. "He underwent successful spine stabilisation surgery on Tuesday night, without complication.

"He is currently stable and should be discharged in the coming days. We are continuing to monitor Scott’s condition closely."

This has been a tough week for the African team as Mark Cavendish was forced out of Milano-Sanremo and Mekseb Debesay out of the Tour de Langkawi, both following heavy crashes while racing.
