Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) has won the second stage of the Volta a Catalunya. The Spaniard was the fastest at the bunch sprint and took the lead in the General Classification.

The 175-kilometre long stage took place between Mataro and Valls. The day started with the escape of Igor Merino (Burgos-BH), Antonio Molina (Caja Rural) and Mikel Bizkarra (Euskadi), who took an advantage of more than three minutes over the pack.

The second stage of the Spanish race went slower than expected because of the wind that hit the front of the peloton. In the end, the riders arrived at the finish line one hour later than the slower expected time.

At around 60 kilometres from the finish, Andrey Grivko (Astana) attacked from the peloton and managed to bridge to the front. Despite the hard work of the four men, all of them were caught at almost 40 kilometres from the end.

The pack arrived together to the last kilometre and good work by Movistar and Jose Joaquin Rojas gave the advantage to Valverde in the last meters. The Spaniard crossed the finish line just ahead of Mitchelton-Scott's Daryl Impey and Bora-hansgrohe's Jay McCarthy.

With this victory, Valverde also took the leader's jersey.
