Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors) will miss Milano-Sanremo due to a fracture he sustained during a crash in the sixth stage of Tirreno-Adriatico.

Just when his team was preparing to position him for the final sprint, Gaviria touched his wheel with Maximiliano Richeze's and hit the deck. The crash not only resulted in him missing the final moments of the stage but also in a fracture in one of the bones of the left hand.

Just after crossing the finish line with some blood, abrasions and pain in his hand, the Colombian headed to the X-ray truck, where a spiral fracture of the metacarpal 1 on the left hand was confirmed. This fracture will require a surgery that will be performed at the AZ Herentals Hospital in Belgium.

"I'm devastated to miss Milano-Sanremo!," said Gaviria. "I was in very good form and was looking forward to Saturday's race. I'm also sorry for my teammates because they did a great job today and I wanted to repay them with a victory. But I must take things as they are now and just hope to have a fast recovery."

The rider, who finished fifth in the 2017 edition of Milano-Sanremo, will know the recovery time of this injury after the surgery.
