Fabio Aru has given much thought to whether he should participate in the 2018 Giro d'Italia or not, eventually choosing to take part for the first time since 2015.

In November, the Italian of UAE Team Emirates already revealed that he would skip the Tour de France in favour of the Giro and the Vuelta a España. Speaking at an event in the United Arab Emirates, he now confirmed and explained his decision.

"I really wanted to mull over this important decision," he said. "And I’ve had many constructive conversations with the team. The decision to participate in the Giro d’Italia was made with conviction, after careful consideration of many variables.

I’m happy to get back to the roads of the Giro; for an Italian athlete it is always a race that offers a special thrill. Furthermore, this year I will be participating with the Italian National Champion’s jersey, which is one more reason to pay maximum homage to the Corsa Rosa."

Aru took part in the Giro d'Italia in 2013, 2014 and 2015, finishing third and second respectively in the latter two editions.
