Michal Kwiatkowski has won the Volta ao Algarve. The Team Sky rider did so in style by winning the fifth and final stage and taking the lead from his teammate Geraint Thomas.

The final stage of the Portuguese race was 173.5 kilometers long, starting in the city of Faro and finishing on the Alto do Malhao near Loule. The stage included three climbs of the third category and two of the second, including the final ascent.

The first half of the stage was dictated by a large escape group with riders like Kwiatkowski, Arnaud Demare and Chad Haga. This group created an advantage of more than five minutes.

Lukas Postlberger of Bora-hansgrohe attacked from the lead group and spent some time alone, until being joined by Quick-Step Floors' Zdenek Stybar. The Czech rider then went on to drop his companion with a little more than ten kilometers to go.

With three kilometers left to the summit and the finish, Zdenek's lead over the rest of the former lead group had grown to 45 seconds.

Team Sky's Kwiatkowski, second in the general classification at 19 seconds from his teammate Thomas, attacked from the chase group with two kilometers left and quickly closed the gap with Stybar, immediately cruising past him to go solo.

The former World Champion never slowed down and took a convincing stage victory, his second in this year's race. Trek-Segafredo's Ruben Guerreiro finished second on the day, ahead of Dimension Data's Serge Pauwels.

Thomas, wearing the Yellow Jersey, crossed the line at 1'49" from Kwiatkowski and as such lost the overall victory to his teammate. For Kwiatkowski, this is his second overall win in the Volta ao Algarve after already having won the race in 2014.
