Geraint Thomas of Team Sky has extended his lead in the Volta ao Algarve with a victory in the individual time trial on Friday.

After two regular stages, the riders now faced a 20.3km time trial with start and finish in the town of Lagoa.

Belgian Victor Campenaerts, who joined Lotto Soudal at the start of this season, set a strong time of 24 minutes and 20 seconds. For a long time, this time topped the standings ahead of riders like Stefan Kung of BMC, Michael Kwiatkowski of Sky and Katusha's Tony Martin.

Race leader Thomas was the last rider to get underway and the Welshman quickly revealed his intentions. At the finish, he was 11 seconds faster than Campenaerts, having completed the course in 24 minutes and 9 seconds.

Campenaerts did secure the second place ahead of Kung and Kwiatkowski.

In the overall standings, Thomas remains at the top with two stages to go. On Saturday, sprinters may well get a chance at the end of a 199.2km stage from Almodovar to Tavira.
