Luis Leon Sanchez beats Alejandro Valverde at Vuelta a Murcia

Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) has taken the victory of the Vuelta a Murcia. The Spaniard crossed the finish line ahead of Alejandro Valverde, his companion at the front throughout the last kilometres.

The Spanish race started with an escape of 40 riders that went ahead and built a gap of more than four minutes with the pack. That group broke down as the kilometres passed until only Matteo Trentin (Mitchelton-Scott) and Philippe Gilbert (Quick-Step Floors) remained in front.

With 50 kilometres to go, Sanchez and Valverde made a jump from the pack, caught the escapees and left them behind to be reeled back in by the peloton. The duo from Murcia rode together until the last moment and Sanchez decided to make an attack with two kilometres to go that Valverde couldn't answer.

Gilbert, Trentin and Pieter Serry (Quick-Step Floors) completed the top five of the day.
