Alejandro Valverde of Movistar is the new leader of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana after winning the second stage of the Spanish race.

The Spaniard, for whom this is his first stage race since his crash in the 2017 Tour de France, launched a strong attack in the final phase and was joined by Astana's Jakob Fuglsang and Luis Leon Sanchez.

The two Astana riders attempted to drop Valverde in the remaining kilometers but failed to do so. Sanchez then aimed to beat his compatriot in the final sprint but Valverde proved to have the better legs and finished ahead of Sanchez and Fuglsang.

The group with race leader Danny van Poppel finished at 19 seconds, due to which the leader's jersey moves from the Dutchman to Valverde. Sanchez and Fuglsang complete the top three of the overall standings.

Wout Poels, who won the race in 2016, is currently in fourth position at 29 seconds from the leader.
