Marc Sarreau takes first stage at Etoile de Besseges

Marc Sarreau of FDJ is the first leader of the Etoile de Besseges after winning the opening stage on Wednesday.

The first stage began in Bellegarde and finished 162 kilometers later in the town of Beaucaire. An escape group with Michiel Dieleman, Aritz Bagues and Milan Menten was allowed an advantage of just over three minutes but was caught at about five kilometers from the finish.

In the final sprint, with AG2R La Mondiale trying to organize things in their favour, it was instead FDJ to take the victory through Sarreau. Compatriots Thomas Boudat (Direct Energie) and Bryan Coquard (Vital Concept) completed the podium.

As such, Sarreau is also the first leader of this year's edition of the French race.

The Etoile de Besseges consists of five stages and features two WorldTour teams (AG2R and FDJ) in addition to teams like Direct Energie and Cofidis. The start lists includes riders like Tony Gallopin, Stijn Devolder and Lilian Calmejane.
