LottoNL-Jumbo's Danny van Poppel has won the first stage of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana. The Dutchman was the strongest at the final sprint in Peñiscola.

A group of four formed by Francisco Mancebo, Paul Ourselin, Jose Manuel Diaz and Ibai Salas escaped from the peloton during the first kilometres of the 191.5-kilometre stage. A peloton pulled by LottoNL-Jumbo and Team Sky went on to hunt the escapees.

At around 18 kilometres from the end, the front group was caught and the peloton sped through the streets of Peñiscola. During the last 10 kilometres, a crash shook up the peloton and Team Sky's Gianni Moscon took the chance to create a gap with the rest but he was reeled back in in the last meters.

LottoNL-Jumbo's train put Danny van Poppel in a good position and even though he launched his sprint soon, his legs were strong enough to keep the lead until the end. The rider also takes the lead in the General Classification.

Mitchelton-Scott's Luka Mezgec was second in the bunch sprint and BMC's Jurgen Roelandts was third.
