World Champion Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) has stated that he had a good relationship with Alberto Contador, a rider that he still admires.

The rider was at Tinkoff with Contador and unlike the Spaniard had a good relationship with its CEO Oleg Tinkov. Even though Contador won several WorldTour races - including Grand Tours - with the Russian team, its owner was critical of him, particularly when he signed for Trek-Segafredo.

It was rumoured that the relationship of Sagan and Contador wasn't good either as a reflection of Tinkov with both riders, but the World Champion stated that it was the contrary. "There was never conflict between us, we always understood each other about how to keep going and for me, he has been a great champion," said the rider to Spanish news agency EFE during his visit to Vatican City.

"The person that he is made an impact on me and he gave a lot to the world of cycling. I was always surprised about his competitiveness with other riders. He has a lot of confidence in himself and always goes to take what he wants."

Sagan started his season taking a stage victory and topping the Point Classification in the Tour Down Under. "I come from Australia with very good feelings," he commented. "It's the first time in my life that I win something in January.

"Now I will go to the training centre in the Sierra Nevada and then I will start in the Strade Bianchi, Tirreno-Adriatico and Milan-San Remo."
