The Dutch city of Utrecht has officially applied to be the host of the start of the 2020 Vuelta a España.

There had already been rumours of the intentions of the city to host the departure of the third Grand Tour of the season and the application has now been sent, reports French newspaper L'Equipe.

Utrecht wants to complete its three Grand Tours departures after the Giro d'Italia in 2010 and the Tour de France in 2015.

But the intentions of the city for cycling don't stop there. If this application for the Vuelta start gets accepted, Utrecht also aims to try to get the World Road Championships in the near future.

This wouldn't be the first time for the Vuelta a España to start in the Netherlands. The city of Assen already hosted the start of the Spanish race in 2009.
