New UCI President David Lappartient will not attend the Tour of Flanders this year. The Frenchman is staying away to protest the race's decision to invite Lance Armstrong.

The organiser of the 'Ronde van Vlaanderen' made the controversial decision to invite the Texan to attend the race as a special guest. Lappartient had already expressed his concern by contacting the organising committee, but his call appeared to have had no effect.

"This is not the image we want to convey from cycling," Lappartient said to explain his decision.

"We want to put clean sport ahead and Armstrong is not an icon for that," he added. Lappartient will instead attend another race in Belgium.
