A stomach virus has stopped Bahrain-Merida's Vincenzo Nibali from starting at the Vuelta a San Juan in Argentina.

The rider has suffered from fever and diarrhoea in the last hours before the start of the first stage. "During the night Vincenzo was not feeling good but in the last hours he started having symptoms like fever and vomiting," said team doctor Emilio Magni to Italian website tuttobiciweb.

"Several members of the team have had problems and unfortunately Vincenzo was hit by it at the least opportune moment. He was not in a position to pedal. The reasons? There can be many: the thermal shock between Italy and Argentina, the air conditioning of the hotel, the viruses that go around."

The Italian was set to start his season at the Vuelta a San Juan and it will have to be in another race. "At this moment Vincenzo's morale is not the best, but we are confident of a speedy recovery," the doctor added.
