Tom Dumoulin of Sunweb Team will ride the Giro d'Italia in 2018. A team spokesman confirmed this to Dutch website NuSport on Thursday.

Whether Dumoulin also rides the Tour de France, will be decided after the Giro d'Italia.

As such, the 'Maastricht Butterfly' will attempt to defend the title he won in the Italian grand tour in 2017, when he beat Nairo Quintana and Vincenzo Nibali to secure the overall victory at the end of a thrilling time trial in Milano.

In order to win the trophy again, Dumoulin will need to be even stronger in the mountains as the amount of time trial kilometers is down to just 44, ten of which form the opening stage in Jerusalem on May 4th.

If nothing changes, Dumoulin will have opposition of Team Sky's Chris Froome, who won both the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España in 2017.
