Former rider Michael Boogerd will return to cycling as a team leader for Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij for the 2018 season.

In 2013, six years after his retirement, the Dutchman confessed the use of EPO, blood transfusions and cortisone during his professional career. The UCI imposed a suspension for him from early 2016 until the 21st of December of 2017.

Having completed his time outside of cycling, the former rider is returning to the Dutch team that he helped found. "I am really excited to get back to work", he said to Dutch broadcaster NOS.

Boogerd will return to work during the team presentation on January 5th and will then go with the riders to the training camp in Calpe, Spain. "Of course I have followed cycling and the team from the distance during the last seasons and I think the team is in a very good form," he commented.

Team manager Michael Zijlaard is happy with having the former rider back in the team. "Someone with the knowledge and the experience that Michael has, in the positive and the negative sense, along with his passion for our sport, is always an added value for our team," he explained.
