Ilnur Zakarin will be the leader of Katusha-Alpecin for the 2018 Tour de France. The Russian will ride the race for the first time.

After a 2017 season in which he finished in the fifth position of the Giro d'Italia and third in the Vuelta a España, it's time for the rider to face the French Grand Tour. "I have goals for the Tour even though it is a race that will be new for me," he commented. "I hope to see myself making the top five. I had some doubts the middle week of the Vuelta, but I kept getting stronger and realized how good I was feeling.

"It is good to know this happens on the big tours and I will come with more experience to my next three-week race. My condition was very good at the end."

General Manager Jose Azevedo believes in Zakarin's talent to tackle the race. "We see his third-place finish in the Vuelta a España as a huge step for him," he explained. "The group we have around him is strong."
