Former rider Alberto Contador has joined the debate on whether Chris Froome should ride the Giro d'Italia in 2018. The Spaniard thinks the Briton has what it takes to face this new challenge.

Contador believes that the four-time Tour de France winner could take the victory at the Italian and the French Grand Tours in the upcoming season. "Chris Froome is capable of winning the Giro and the Tour," said the former rider to Spanish news agency EFE.

"If he faces both races, he can win them both because he is a great rider and has a great team. The Giro is a different race, the weather has a bigger influence than in the Tour and the Vuelta, but he is capable of taking the overall victory."

Contador retired from cycling after taking seven official victories in Grand Tours - being stripped of one Tour de France and one Giro d'Italia for a doping case that still makes him feel upset. "That is the toughest thing that can happen to you in sports and at a personal level for you and your family," he explained.

"I fight to the maximum to show that it was not a doping case. And the people that followed the case know that, but sometimes there is no justice. Not everything is valid to reach a goal and kids see you as an example."
