Jan Bakelants will undergo emergency surgery in Belgium to stabilize the fractures of the L3 vertebra, suffered during a serious crash in Il Lombardia.

On Saturday, October 7, the Belgian crashed in the same curve as the infamous accident of Laurens De Plus. He was immediately taken to the St. Anna Hospital in Como, Italy, where he was diagnosed with fractures in two dorsal vertebrae (D8, D10) and two lumbar vertebrae (L1, L3).

Bakelants suffered a hemothorax and many other conditions that made it impossible to take him to Belgium sooner, having to stay in intensive care in Italy. Now the surgery has been scheduled for the afternoon of the 12th of October.

The rider is very touched by the messages of cycling fans wishing him a speedy recovery but hasn't been able to answer any due to his condition, his team AG2R La Mondiale explained.
