Director of the Giro d'Italia Mauro Vegni thinks Chris Froome (Team Sky) should try to win all three Grand Tours in one season.

Froome wrote his name in history books in 2017 when he managed to win the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España in the same season. Now the Giro d'Italia boss wants to talk him into also attempting the Italian victory.

"He has to have the desire to try and become the first rider to achieve this feat. It would be historical," said Vegni to The Associated Press agency.

"If he wins the Giro, who’s stopping him (from trying to win all three Grand Tours)? He’s one of the few riders who can really attempt to follow a Giro victory by also taking the Tour."

Froome has participated in the Italian Grand Tour only twice. The first time in 2009 with Barloworld in which he finished in 32nd position and the second one year later in 2010 with Sky, where he was disqualified in the 19th stage due to a motorcycle grabbing incident that came just after he had already decided to withdraw, as he has stated himself.

"But first he should grab this milestone [the Giro]. There’s plenty of motivation but it needs to be him that judges it worthy of attempting," added the Director of the Italian race.

The Kenyan-born still hasn't decided his plans for 2018 but he will likely focus on the Tour de France, where he can attempt to equal the achievements of riders like Eddy Merckx and Miguel Indurain with five victories.
