Chris Froome finished safely in the peloton to secure his first overall victory in the Vuelta a España, taking enough points in the process to win the points classification as well.

The Team Sky leader had already failed on several occasions to win the Vuelta a España, but finally got to stand on the highest step of the podium at the end of this year's edition.

"It's just an incredible feeling," he said shortly after receiving the trophy. "Today at the final I figured 'probably this will be the only time in my life to try to win the Green jersey in a Grand Tour'. So we gave it everything we had and managed to get a few points in the finish. I couldn't be happier with the result.

"I'm just a bike racer. It was a competition to be won and of course I was going to go for it."

By winning the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España in the same year, Froome put himself on a very short list of legends that have done the same.

"I'm still coming to terms with everything. It's been such an incredible journey. Just the fact that nobody has ever won the Tour and the won the Vuelta afterwards is incredible. It's incredible to be able to do it and obviously I didn't do it alone. It was thanks to an amazing team behind me.

"Thanks so much for the support from everyone. From the fans, from my family, from my friends. It's been some amazing few months and I would like to say thank you to everybody that has contributed to them.

"I've been fighting for this victory for six years and for three years I've been standing on the second step. It is amazing to stand on the top step this time."
