Italian Matteo Trentin won the final stage of the Vuelta a España but missed out on the Green Jersey as race winner Chris Froome successfully defended his lead in the points classification.

Trentin needed points at the only intermediate sprint of the day as well as the stage win. The Quick-Step rider did what was expected from him but Froome's 11th place at the finish was enough for the Team Sky rider to finish two points ahead of the Italian in the final points standings.

"The team's work was incredible the whole day, you could see it on television," Trentin said. "It was a job that started from when we came onto the circuit to the finish and it is a really nice victory to have."

The rider could not hide his disappointment of just missing out on the points jersey, having been aware from the start that Froome was planning to defend his position.

"He told me he wanted to defend it, and he made it. It's a pity because with four victories, and we don't have the jerse. It's a kind of a joke but it is like this. But I will survive."

Having won no less than four stages, the 2017 Vuelta a España was better than could have ever hoped for.

"Of course! I won two sprint stages and two difficult ones, so I can really be happy about it."
