Tom Dumoulin may perform an intentional bike change at the upcoming World Championships Time Trial in Bergen, Norway.

The Dutchman of Team Sunweb is one of the top favorites to win the time trial but is still considering his options, given the fact that the last few kilometers of the course feature a climb.

One of the possibilities is the use of a time trial bike for the first 27.6 kilometers and then switch to a regular road bike for the final 3.4 kilometers, Sunweb coach Adriaan Helmantel told newspaper De Volkskrant.

The coach is aware of the difficulties of such a bike change. "You have to get off, back on and be pushed back up to speed. We'd definitely have to practice that. Pushing a rider well can also make a difference of a few seconds so it's important that the mechanics are fit.

"It's a matter of mathematics. How much time do you lose by changing and how many will you win back?"

The coach insists that it is up to the rider to make the final call. "Tom has the final say. I explored the climb, but maybe he experiences it in a very different way. We provide the facts and he tests them in the real world. We will do whatever is fastest."

The time trial of the 2017 World Championships will take place on Sunday, September 17.
