Matteo Trentin (Quick-Step Floors) has won the 13th stage of the Vuelta a España. The Italian was the fastest at the final sprint beating Gianni Moscon (Team Sky) and Soren Kragh Andersen (Sunweb).

The 13th stage of the Spanish race was 198.4 kilometres long between Coin and Tomares. It took the riders through a rolling route on a day that was meant to be a transition day for the General Classification contenders and an opportunity for the sprinters.

Just after the real start of the stage, five riders escaped. Alessandro De Marchi (BMC), Alexis Gougeard (AG2R La Mondiale), Davide Villella (Cannondale-Drapac), Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal) and Arnaud Courteille (FDJ) took an advantage of more than four minutes with the pack.

Villella got the KOM points at the day's climb in order to keep the shirt of the climbers for another day, and then he dropped from the front group and waited for the peloton. At 25 kilometres from the end, De Marchi and De Gendt increased the pace and left the other two escapees behind.

With 13 kilometres to go, De Gendt couldn't keep up with De Marchi and the Italian continued on his own until he was caught close to the six kilometres mark. The peloton rode together until the end. In the final sprint Quick-Step positioned Matteo Trentin well and the rider showed to have the legs to take his third victory in the race.

Chris Froome (Team Sky) keeps leading the General Classification standings ahead of Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) and Esteban Chaves (Orica-Scott). Wilco Kelderman (Sunweb) moves up to fourth place as David de la Cruz (Quick-Step) lost a few seconds on the climb leading up to the finish.
