BinckBank Tour - Tim Wellens takes stage, Tom Dumoulin leads GC

Tim Wellens (Lotto Soudal) has taken the victory at the sixth stage of the BinckBank Tour. Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) leads the General Classification.

The sixth stage of the Belgian-Dutch race was 203.7 kilometres long between Riemst and Houffalize. It was a hilly day on which the rain was one of the stars.

The day started with a breakaway conformed by Tony Martin (Katusha-Alpecin), Tao Geogheagan (Sky), Dylan van Baarle (Cannondale-Drapac), Alexis Gougeard (AG2R La Mondiale) and Pieter Weening (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij). The escapees managed to create a gap of more than four minutes with the peloton.

The front group was caught with thirty kilometres to go and what followed was a series of attacks that broke the pack. Oliver Naesen (AG2R La Mondiale), Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal) and Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) all tried their luck.

Dumoulin and Wellens went ahead of the rest and behind them Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe), who was initially at the front as well but suffered a puncture at a terrible moment, led the chase group until he gave up because none of his companions were taking any turns.

The duo arrived to the finish together and the Belgian crossed the line first, while Dumoulin's second spot was enough for him to take the first position in the General Classification.

Wellens now trails the Dutchman by four seconds and Greg Van Avermaet of BMC Racing Team follows at 46 seconds. The top five is completed by Jasper Stuyven of Trek-Segafredo and Astana's Michael Valgren.
