Spaniard Juan Jose Lobato has won first stage of the Tour de l'Ain. The LottoNL-Jumbo rider is also the new leader in the overall classification.

Following Tuesday's prologue, which was won by Frenchman Johan Le Bon, the action continued with a regular 141.1km stage from Polliat to Trevoux.

A group of five rode away from the peloton early on the day. Paul Ourselin of Direct Energie, Florian Stork of Sunweb Development, Johannes Schinnagel of the German selection, Felix Pouilly of Roubaix-Lille Metropole and Sergey Luchshenko of Astana City created a gap of close to four minutes.

Their effort didn't pay off however and the five were caught in the last kilometer. Moments later, Lobato powered to victory ahead of home favorite Nacer Bouhanni of Cofidis and Armee de Terre rider Steven Tronet.

The bonus seconds allow Lobato to move into first place with an advantage of six seconds over Le Bon (FDJ).

"I'm very happy with my first victory for Team LottoNL-Jumbo," Lobato said. "I dedicate it to my late uncle Antonio and my family, who always supported me. The start of my season was not as I had imagined, but I never lost faith in myself. In addition, I would also like to thank the team for their support in this difficult period."
