Spanish cyclist Alberto Contador will ride his last race as a professional, the upcoming Vuelta a España, wearing shirt number 1.

The 34-year-old recently announced his departure from professional cycling, adding that the Vuelta would be his last race.

"That Alberto chooses Spain and La Vuelta to call it a career is a great honor for the whole organization," said the race's general director Javier Guillén. "We are wholeheartedly grateful to the generosity he always demonstrated as a rider and that he shows once again with this decision. Alberto is – and will forever be – part of the history of cycling in our country and elsewhere."

Replying to the Vuelta's decision, Contador tweeted that it will be an honour to wear bib number 1 in his last race.

The number 1 was available due to the absense of reigning champion Nairo Quintana. The Movistar rider rode both the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France this year and will skip the 2017 edition of the VUelta.
