A photo finish was necessary to confirm that Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) won the first stage of the BinckBank Tour. The rider crossed the finish line millimetres ahead of Phil Bauhaus.

The first stage of the race formerly known as Eneco Tour was 169.8 kilometres long between Breda and Venray in the Netherlands. It was a flat course that was set to finish in a bunch sprint, which was indeed the case.

Early on the day a group of four escaped the peloton. Mark McNally (Wanty-Groupe Gobert), Laurens De Vreese (Astana), Piet Allegaert (Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise) and Elmar Reinders (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij) got an advantage of more than two minutes over the peloton.

The escapees finished their adventure at three kilometres from the finish line, where they were caught by a motivated peloton. With so many strong sprinters in the race, the peloton quickly divided itself into several lead-out trains.

The bunch sprint was fast and even though Phil Bauhaus (Sunweb) went ahead first, Peter Sagan was soon next to him and managed to cross the line just ahead of the German. Magnus Cort Nielsen (Orica-Scott) was third in the day's stage.

Sagan also gets the first leader's jersey ahead of the Time Trial on day two.
