Alexander Kristoff victorious at European Championships

Alexander Kristoff has won the European Championships Men's Road Race. The Katusha-Alpecin rider crossed the finish line centimetres ahead of Elia Viviani.

The 2017 Men's European Championships road race was 240 kilometres long. The riders had to complete 12 laps on a 20-kilometre circuit in and around the city of Herning, Denmark.

The race started with a first escape conformed by Nikolai Shumov (Belarus), Anton Elfarsoon (Iceland) and Lukas Spengler (Switzerland). This trio got an advantage of more than 12 minutes over a peloton that was taking the race very easy.

With 100 kilometres to go, this group was caught but another formed soon after with Jens Keukeleire (Belgium), Imanol Erviti (Spain) and Pirmin Lang (Switzerland) creating a new breakaway. Meanwhile, punctures had left behind favourites like Elia Viviani (Italy) and Edvald Boasson Hagen (Norway), but they rejoined the peloton without much trouble.

Past the 50 kilometres mark, this new trio was also reeled back in and the compact group led by Belgium set a high pace with the objective of avoiding any new escapes.

With 12 kilometres to go, Luis Leon Sanchez (Spain) made a big acceleration and managed to create a gap with the pack, being followed by around ten more riders of countries like Norway, the Netherlands, Italy and Belgium. A couple of kilometres later, they were neutralised by the bunch.

Six kilometers were left to go when Boasson Hagen and Keukeleire attacked and were later joined by Nikolay Trusov (Russia). The riders created a gap and left a peloton taking turns to set a higher pace and bring them back.

In the last kilometre, Boasson Hagen attacked from the front group but was soon surpassed by the sprint trains. There was a crash during the last metres, but the main men were already in front fighting for the race. Alexander Kristoff (Norway) showed to be a bit faster than Viviani and Moreno Hofland (Netherlands).
