Mikel Landa (Team Sky) showed to be the strongest in the Queen Stage of the Vuelta a Burgos. In the last metres he left David de la Cruz behind and took the victory.

The last climb of the day to Picon Blanco featured in the race for the first time and its ramps proved to be as difficult as the peloton was expecting them to be. "The climb was really hard, but today I discovered it and I liked it a lot," said Landa at the end of the stage to Spanish website Zikloland.

During the last stretch of the stage, Quick-Step Floors' David de la Cruz and Landa left the rest of the favourites behind. During the last metres, the rider of Team Sky accelerated and left his fellow countryman behind.

"At the end I went away with David and it was difficult to drop him because we had the wind in front," explained Landa. "So we kept going together almost until the end. He was a difficult rival, I know him well and I respect him a lot. I thought he was going to win."

Now the rider is 27 seconds ahead of de la Cruz and 46 ahead of Enric Mas (Quick-Step Floors). These are not big gaps but still give the Spaniard some peace of mind. "Time advantage is always welcome and I am very satisfied ahead of Neila."

The last stage of the race finishes in Lagunas de Neila, a special place for the rider because it was there where he got his first victory as a professional rider back in 2011.
