Omar Fraile to continue career at Astana

Spanish rider Omar Fraile will make the move from Dimension Data to Astana Pro Team at the start of the 2018 season.

The 27-year-old gained international fame by winning the Mountains Classification of the 2015 Vuelta a España while still at Caja Rural, and went on to repeat the achievement during his first season at Dimension Data a year later.

In the current season, the Basque rider won a stage at the Giro d'Italia and finished second in the overall classification of the Tour de Yorkshire.

"Astana is one of the biggest and most famous teams in the peloton, and for me it will be a great honor to become a part of this project for the next two years," Fraile said.

"In previous seasons I’ve made a big step ahead in my development as a professional rider, and I hope I will continue it in Astana Team. I really like the style of Astana Team and its great focus on the Grand tours."

General manager Alexander Vinokourov believes that Fraile has what it takes to be a good addition for mountain stages.

"Omar is a very strong climber, who can be a good reinforcement for our team at the Grand tours. He can do well in any kind of climbs, but he could also be a strong part of the team in the team time trial races. We’ve been watching this athlete for a while, and this season he’s impressed us at the Giro d’Italia. I am sure Fraile will be able to fully reach his potential in our team."
